A fun-packed day of activities in aid of Cancer Research UK will make Hythe the place to be on the first Saturday in July.

Hythe Cricket and Squash Club is organising the sports-based ‘FUN-ding day’ in memory of one of its former members, steward Pam O’Donovan, who passed away with breast cancer in March 2021. Pam worked alongside husband Chris O’Donovan at the club in Ladies Walk, Hythe.

As well as a packed timetable of sporting activities on 2 July, the day-long fund-raiser includes a barbecue, coffee morning and evening disco to make sure there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Hythe Cricket and Squash Club has been supported in its ambitious fund-raising efforts by Hythe Swimming Club and Hythe Tennis Club, which will both also be organising events in the run-up to the day itself.

A 24-hour squash marathon will run throughout the event, beginning on the Friday evening, while the Saturday will allow people of all ages to take part in, or watch, activities including racket ball, cricket, football, short mat bowls, rowing, boxing, table tennis and pétanque.

Live music, a licensed bar, yoga, a raffle and a senior cricket match between the Cavaliers and the Grovellers will add to the fun.

Organiser Dave Hall said: “We are holding the event to honour the memory of Pam and raise much needed funds for Cancer Research UK, with an ambitious target of many thousands of pounds. We are a remarkably close community and want to bring everyone together to enjoy a special day with activities for all ages.”

Sherrill Hawker, Cancer Research UK fundraising spokesperson for Kent, said: “The Cricket and Squash Club is an absolute inspiration, and we can’t thank them enough for playing a part in helping to beat cancer. It’s going to be a fantastic event.

“Cancer survival in the UK has doubled since the early 1970s and Cancer Research UK’s work has been at the heart of that progress. We have only been able to achieve this thanks to the dedication and generosity of volunteers and supporters like the members of Hythe Cricket and Squash Club, without whom we would not be able to fund outstanding scientists, doctors and nurses. One in two of us will get cancer in our lifetime. All of us can support the research that will beat it.”
