Village gardeners put up a brave show

HAWKINGE AND DISTRICT
GARDENERS SOCIETY

April has already been a busy period for the Gardening
Society. Over forty members attended the monthly meeting on
the 2 and unanimously voted for a new Constitution before
being ‘entertained’ by Jackie Aviolet on the subject of
Water – or rather the lack it! She apparently successfully
ran a nursery for a number of years without the aid of piped
water!

Members turned out again on the following
Sunday for the Spring Show. This is an annual inter-club
event against Newington Gardening Society held this year in
their Village Hall. Being a Spring show much of the emphasis
was on narcissi and early blooms and despite Mother Nature
trying to revise this years timing, entries were of a high
standard.

Newington traditionally provides very strong opposition
and this year was no exception. Although some of the
Hawkinge members put up a brave show (ex Chairman Peter
Linkin, to name but one, scored in many classes) Newington
won by a significant margin. However, it was a jolly good
show, colourful and well worth a look in. The afternoon tea
and cakes were magnificent!

The next meeting is on Wednesday May 7 in the Village
Hall starting at 7.30pm when the speaker is Mike Bundock
talking about Floral Clocks.

Hawkinge and District Gardeners' Society AGM and 2008 events

At the recent AGM members gave a rousing vote of thanks to Peter Linkin who stepped down as Chairman after 9 years.

Peter is replaced by Georgina Atkins and outgoing Secretary Jackie Burvill by Tim Allard and Carolyn Goodliff. Jenny Armitage remains Deputy Chairman, Anne Hutt as Treasurer and Joan Brisley as Show secretary. Other committee members remaining in post are Alan Barnes and Ruth Prior.

The next meeting on the 2nd April will incorporate time to vote on a new Constitution – nothing heavyweight but akin to a ‘tidying up exercise’ as the politicians like to phrase it. This will be followed with a talk given by Jackie Aviolet on the subject of Water.

New members and guests are always made to feel welcome. Don’t be shy – come along to the regular meetings held on the first Wednesday of the month in the Village Hall or one of the shows.

The Inter Club Spring Show (6th April) is always an eye opener and well worth a visit. This year it will be held in Newington Village Hall – come along, you’ll be impressed by the amazing displays. For further information contact Tim Allard on 01303 863146 or e-mail timallard@atlas.co.uk

HAWKINGE AND DISTRICT GARDENERS' SOCIETY

The members of the Hawkinge and District Gardeners' Society recently enjoyed their annual garden visit.

This year approximately 30 members visited Flint Cottage in Bishopsbourne where they were treated to a meander around the garden belonging to Mr & Mrs P J Sinnock. The garden is part of the national garden scheme raising money for charity.

A pleasant evening was spent wandering around the small garden: the entrance to the garden having large Scots pine under planted with trees and shrubs and wildlife pond. In the main garden there were 3 ponds and 2 water features; bog areas; mixed borders; alpines in sink gardens; herb garden; vegetables in raised beds. Members also received tasty refreshments served by Mr and Mrs Sinnock.

Next month the speaker’s for the evening (Wednesday 4th July) will be Mr and Mrs Ian Stone with a talk entitled ‘On top of the world – Nepal and Tibet’
