A suspected thief has been arrested after he was chased by an off-duty police officer in Swanley.

The man was successfully detained despite the officer suffering a head injury.

The incident happened at around 8.30pm on Tuesday 22 March 2022, after the suspect had initially entered a Co-op store in the High Street.

It is reported he stole eight cans of beer but was challenged by staff as well as the off-duty officer, who produced his warrant card.

Headbutt

The suspect ran from the scene but after a foot pursuit, was detained with assistance from a member of public. It is alleged the officer was injured when he was headbutted during a struggle.

Aged 36 and from Swanley, the suspect was taken into custody on suspicion of theft, assault on an emergency worker and public order offences. He was later released, pending further investigation.
