Two men have been charged with a series of offences linked to violence and disorder in the centre of Maidstone.

Several incidents were reported from around 7.30pm Tuesday 22 March 2022, at locations including businesses in Week Street.

These included disturbances at fast food takeaways, where staff and customers were assaulted and chairs thrown.

Incidents, linked to the theft of alcohol, were also alleged to have taken place at two shops in the same road, including at Tesco where a glass door was shattered after being kicked.

A further assault was reported on a member of public in Union Street.

Charged and remanded

By 11.45pm, police had identified and arrested two suspects, who were taken into custody.

Cameron Jefferey, 18, of Vale Road, Hawkhurst was later charged with criminal damage, two counts of assault, affray, and assault on an emergency worker.

Danny White, 19, or Terrace Road, Maidstone was charged with affray, three counts of assault, two counts of criminal damage, (which included damage to a police cell) theft and with racially abusing a police officer.

Kidnap

He was further charged in connection with an offence of kidnap. This was related to an allegation the same evening that a woman had been coerced into accompanying the suspect to Brenchley Gardens and threatened with violence if she tried to walk away. However, the victim left the area unharmed.

Both suspects appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Thursday 24 March.

They were remanded in custody until their next hearing, which will be at Maidstone Crown court on 21 April.
