Teenager charged and 19 arrested after more than 100 mopeds and motorcycles stolen in Medway this year

An investigation into the theft of motorbikes across Medway has resulted in officers charging a 17-year-old boy.

The teenager was arrested at 12.12pm on Wednesday 13 April 2022, after a patrol saw him riding a reported stolen motorbike along pavements near Aylesford Crescent, Gillingham.

He attempted to leave the area on foot but was detained following a short foot chase. Officers also seized a screwdriver.

The boy was later charged with counts of theft of a motor vehicle, taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent, going equipped to steal and driving without a licence.

He has been bailed to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday 20 May.

Since 1 January there have been more than 100 motorbikes and mopeds reported stolen across Medway, of which around 50 have been recovered.

Officers have arrested a total of 19 suspects, aged between 14 and 21, all of whom are bailed pending further investigation.
