A bedroom fire in the early hours of this morning, 19 August, at a flat in Deal is reported to have started accidentally after an unattended lit candle spread to other items.

Two fire engines rushed to the property in Sondes Road and firefighters were able to rescue a woman, who was given oxygen for suspected smoke inhalation before being passed into the care of the ambulance service.

Crews wore breathing apparatus and used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

Following the incident, firefighters are reminding people to take extra care when lighting candles and to ensure the flame is fully out before leaving the room, or going to bed.

Candles should be placed in a suitable holder and on a non-flammable surface, well away from any flammable items such as curtains, bedding or clothing. Also, remember to have a working smoke alarm on each floor of your property and to test it regularly.
