A suspect has been arrested and charged in the space of almost 24 hours after a Strood pensioner was allegedly assaulted and robbed at her doorstep.

The victim, aged in her 80s, is reported to have been punched in the stomach by a bogus charity worker who attended her address near Frindsbury Road, on Wednesday 24 August 2022.

The man is said to have knocked on her door at around 10am and told her he was collecting money for good causes.

When the victim went to open a purse, he is alleged to have snatched it and assaulted her, before running away.

Charged and remanded

At 9.10am on Thursday 25 August, Paul Stone, 46, of no fixed address was arrested in Gillingham High Street and later charged with robbery.

He appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday 26 August, where he was remanded in custody.

The suspect’s next hearing will be at Maidstone Crown Court on 23 September.
