Merchant Navy Day, 3rd September, is an annual day to honour the brave men and women of the Merchant Navy, including those who lost their lives at times of war, and to recognise all those who work on our seas and in our ports.
On Friday 2nd September, Natalie Elphicke MP joined with others for a well-attended service and ceremony held at the Merchant Navy War Memorial on Marine Parade. The service was arranged by the Chairman of Dover District Council, Cllr Mike Conolly, along with the Founder of the Dover and District Merchant Navy Memorial Fund, Donald Hunter.
Natalie Elphicke MP said: “The statue and memorial for the Merchant Navy is one of the most stunning along the Dover seafront. It was an honour to meet the memorial founder, Donald Hunter, and to pay tribute to those merchant seafarers who risked their lives keeping food and vital supplies flowing at time of war. We continue to recognise all those who work on our seas and in our port, and their contribution to our community and our nation.”
