The Maidstone Town Centre Task Force and officers from Kent Police’s Tactical Operations Department have been using a knife bar and working with passive drug dogs as part of an increased focus on keeping residents and visitors safe.
The ongoing work to deter violence and target other issues, including county lines criminality, was carried out during the evening of Friday 28 October 2022.
High visibility patrols were present with a knife bar in areas including Week Street, Earl Street and the High Street. A search for discarded knives was also completed in Brenchley Gardens. No weapons were located.
Safeguarding
Throughout the evening, officers worked closely with licensed premises and CCTV operators to continue making the night-time economy a hostile place for those who may seek to exploit others.
They also proactively checked on the welfare of vulnerable individuals who appeared to be in need of their assistance.
Constables arrested two men on suspicion of drug supply offences following a foot chase along the River Medway towpath. A quantity of class A drugs along with some cash was seized.
Officers also seized more than 1,000 cannabis plants in a rented property in Bank Street. Cultivation equipment was recovered and enquiries are underway to identify those responsible for the premises.
Checks
Several cars were stopped and checked with one motorist receiving a traffic offence report for driving without insurance. A man stopped in Earl Street was detained as he was wanted for failing to appear at court.
The District Commander for Maidstone, Chief Inspector Mark McLellan, said: ‘Residents and visitors to the town centre can expect to see an enhanced police presence during the weekends throughout November and into December.
‘We are determined to tackle those intent on violent or disorderly behaviour and will be targeting those who travel to the county town to commit crime.
‘Please also remember we depend on the public for assistance. You can be our eyes and ears, so if you see anything suspicious call 101, or 999 if a crime is in progress.’
