A resident of St James’ Gardens in Whitstable was scammed by two men who claimed to be from Canterbury Council housing repairs contractor, Mears, on Friday afternoon.
The men said they had come to do some repairs and needed to be paid in advance. The resident gave them some money and tried to get more from a cashpoint, but failed.
The resident’s family and council officers are helping them. The police have been informed of the scam.
Canterbury Council want to remind residents that all work done by Mears for them is scheduled and confirmed beforehand.
Their staff will always have ID and never turn up without notice. They will never request or demand any payment from the tenant.
This applies to all our housing contractors, not just Mears.
