A manhunt is underway after a horrific assault in Chatham that left a man with a severe head injury and robbed of his wallet.

The attack took place in the High Street at its junction with Church Street around 6pm on Thursday 22 June 2023. The victim, who is in his 40s, was reportedly punched by another man during a confrontation. As he lay on the ground, a second man stole his wallet and fled the scene.

The victim was rushed to hospital where he remains in a serious condition.

Police have arrested a suspect on suspicion of assault and are holding him in custody.

Detective Inspector Paul Fewtrell, said: ‘It is understood there were several people in the area at the time of the incident, as well as motorists who may have been driving along this section of the High Street or on surrounding roads.

‘We are appealing to witnesses or anyone with information to contact us. Motorists with dashcam are also asked to check for relevant footage.’
