Folkestone is set to become a more vibrant, accessible and green destination thanks to a £19.8m investment from the government’s Levelling Up Fund. The fund aims to support projects that boost local economies and improve the quality of life for communities.

Folkestone & Hythe District Council is working with Kent County Council and AECOM to deliver phase one of Folkestone – A Brighter Future, a project that will create a better connection between Folkestone Central railway station and the town centre.

The project will simplify the complex road network around Cheriton Road, Middelburg Square and Shellons Street, making it easier and safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. It will also enhance the public realm with more greenery, seating and lighting.

The council wants to hear from residents who use the routes regularly and have insights to share on the proposed changes. Two public engagement events will be held at the Bouverie House Business Centre in Bouverie Place, Folkestone (CT20 1AE) on Wednesday 5 July and Thursday 6 July from midday to 7pm.

At the events, residents will be able to see maps, diagrams and illustrations of the future vision for the area of Station Approach, Cheriton Road and Cheriton Gardens. They will also be able to talk to the project team and give their feedback.

For those who cannot attend the events, the information and a survey will be available online at folkestone-hythe.gov.uk/luf-public-engagement after next week. Paper copies can also be requested by emailing public.engagement@folkestone-hythe.gov.uk or phoning 01303 853000.

Cllr Rich Holgate, Cabinet Member for Economic Development, said: “This is a great opportunity for residents to get involved in shaping the future of Folkestone town centre. We want to create a welcoming, attractive and sustainable place that benefits everyone who lives, works and visits here.”

The project will also include further phases that will focus on improving Bouverie Square, developing Folca – a new creative hub – and upgrading Sandgate Road.

Creative Folkestone has been appointed as the creative partner for the project and will bring its expertise in art, culture and placemaking to the process.

Jo Cowdrey, Head of Curatorial for Creative Folkestone, said: “We are delighted to be part of this exciting project that will showcase Folkestone’s creativity and innovation. We believe that art and culture can transform places and inspire people.”
