The winners with their trophies

The Elham Gardening Society held its annual show on Saturday 29 July, showcasing the best of the local produce, flowers and creativity.

The herb class

The event attracted 436 entries of high quality and received high praises from the main judge Janine Doulton, who said that the show’s standard and organisation were the best she’s seen!

Flower display

The show featured various categories, such as fruit, veg, flowers, domestic, art and photography. Some of the highlights included:

  • Mark Flight’s impressive 9lb 7oz of potatoes grown from a single potato in a bucket.
  • David Kincaid’s six trophies for his fruit, veg and flower entries, which also earned him the prize for the most points in the show.
  • Maggie Newington’s beautiful flower arrangement from her own garden, which won her the Best Exhibit in the show.
  • Phillip Oostenbrink, head gardener at Walmer Castle, judged that Janice Cooper had the most pleasing garden and this allowed her to retain the Harrowing Bowl.
  • The judge awarded the Harrowing Cup for the best home garden/allotment to Claire and Mike Donnelly.
  • John Baker’s delicious chocolate marble cake, which won him the Rupert Trophy in the gentlemen-only domestic class for the third year running.
  • Laura Benson’s stunning photograph entitled Reflections, which won her the WI Cup.

The show also featured a display of 100 drawings and paintings of life Under the sea by children from Elham Primary School. The overall winner was Dylan from Willow Class.
