Summer is here, and there is no better place to enjoy it than at the beach. But before you pack your swimsuit and sunscreen, why not join the Summer Safety Event in Dover and learn how to have fun and stay safe in the sun and in the water?
The Summer Safety Event is a free and family-friendly event that will take place on Wednesday 16 August from 10am to 2pm near the Rebels Community Coffee Shop at the eastern end of Dover Seafront. It is organised by Dover District Council’s Community Services team, in partnership with the Port of Dover, Kent Police, HM Coastguard, St John Ambulance, and NHS Kent & Medway.
The event will offer a range of advice and information on how to enjoy the beach safely this summer. You will learn about:
- The risks of tomb stoning, which is jumping from high places into the water, and how to avoid them.
- The importance of being “skin smart” by protecting yourself from sunburn and skin cancer, and how to spot the signs of both.
- The best ways to treat minor injuries that may happen on your days out this summer, such as cuts, stings, or sprains.
- The role of the emergency services, volunteers, and cadets who keep us safe on the beach and at sea, and how you can support them.
You will also have the chance to meet some of the people who work hard to make our beaches safe and enjoyable, such as lifeguards, coastguards, police officers, and paramedics. They will show you some of their equipment and vehicles, and answer any questions you may have. There will also be some activity packs for the younger ones to keep them entertained.
Cllr Charlotte Zosseder, cabinet member for Community at DDC, said: “It is wonderful to see residents and visitors enjoying our beaches this summer. But there are also risks that come with the warmer weather, from the dangers of tomb stoning to over-exposure to the sun.”
