A group of 22 people who dropped litter in Medway have been hit with hefty fines after failing to pay fixed penalty notices.
The litterbugs were ordered by magistrates to pay a total of £10,286 for their offences, which took place between October and November last year.
The cases were heard at East Berkshire Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 5 June. Only one person pleaded guilty, while the rest were found guilty in their absence.
The council’s enforcement team issued the fixed penalty notices as part of its ongoing campaign to keep Medway clean and tidy.
Cllr Tris Osborne, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder covering Enforcement, said: “We work hard all year round to keep Medway looking clean and tidy and won’t let the small minority ruin this. We will continue to send the message loud and clear that littering is not tolerated in Medway.”
He added: “Littering is not only unsightly, but it also harms the environment and wildlife. We urge everyone to dispose of their rubbish responsibly and use the bins provided or take it home with them.”
