Dover District Council is set to roll out plans to introduce new wheeled bins for garden waste collections from April 2024, bringing DDC in line with other Kent authorities – following a decision by DDC’s Cabinet at its meeting last night, (4 September).

The change from garden waste sacks to wheeled bins is designed to make it easier and safer for householders and collection crews to lift and move garden waste going forward.

Existing customers changing over to the new service are set to be provided with a free 240L wheeled bin.  The Council is to contact subscribers with further details on changes to the service.

DDC, like many other Councils, provides a chargeable garden waste collection service to residents. We also continue to encourage people to home compost, which allows householders to dispose of a range of garden and food waste at home.

DDC is set to provide a single wheeled bin at no cost to existing customers in the first year of the new service, and to offer a £25 voucher for a free home composter to those existing customers who are unable to access the new service.  It is proposed to fund the change in the service using the “Green Redeem” funding from central government.

The current DDC annual subscription fee is £58 for a 25-alternate week service. It is proposed that the 2024/25 subscription will be reviewed as part of the coming annual review of fees and charges.

Cllr Edward Biggs, DDC Cabinet Member for Built Environment, said: “We know that many residents rely on our garden waste collections, and we are very pleased to be able to continue to provide this service for households.  These key changes will enable us to make the service easier to use, safer, and more efficient for the future.”
