Dartford’s Orchard Theatre, which was closed last week due to safety concerns related to the material used in its roof, will undergo a full roof replacement project, according to a joint statement from Dartford Borough Council and Trafalgar Theatres.

The statement said that the theatre, which is a vital part of the town’s cultural and economic life, had no choice but to close based on the advice from building surveyors. It also said that the council and the theatre company are committed to re-opening the venue as soon as possible, but that a phased approach to the roof works is not feasible.

The council has started the process of fast-tracking the design and construction of a new auditorium roof, which may also include some other improvements to the theatre. The statement said that the council has long-term confidence in the venue and that it is worth investing fully to prepare it for the future, even if it means a longer period of closure in the short term.

Trafalgar Theatres, meanwhile, are working with the council to minimise the impact on the theatre’s programme, including exploring alternative ways and places to provide shows. The statement said that they hope to find ways to reduce the effects on the theatre goers, the staff, and the local businesses.

The statement also thanked the wider arts community, producers, and artists for their support, and said that the council has begun discussions with local groups and amateur societies to ensure they are fully supported too.

The statement said that the formal suspension of performances at the Orchard Theatre will be extended until at least 31 October, and that ticket holders will be contacted by the venue with information about rescheduled dates or full reimbursement. The statement asked customers to wait for the contact and not to call the theatre at this stage.
