Delegation celebrating new sister city relationship between Folkestone and Mechinagar

Folkestone was thrilled to host a special visit from the Mayor of Mechinagar, Mr Gopal Chandra Budathoki, and his team from the Municipality of Mechinagar early this October.

They came to celebrate the new sister city relationship between Folkestone and Mechinagar, which was established in 2019 after Folkestone Town Council agreed to sign the Friendship Charter with Nepal.

This historic agreement aims to strengthen the bonds and enrich the relations between Nepal and the UK, and to promote tourism, culture and friendship.

The Town Mayor of Folkestone 2019-2020, Councillor Jackie Meade, had the honour of visiting Nepal for the official signing of the Charter. Now, it was Folkestone’s turn to welcome the Nepalese guests and show them the beauty and diversity of the town.

The delegation met with the current Town Mayor of Folkestone, Cllr Belinda Walker, and Town Councillors, and also visited the District Council, Kent County Council and the Embassy of Nepal in London. They also attended the Gurkha Memorial Day Service on Sunday 1st October and enjoyed receptions with the Gurkha Memorial Fund and the Folkestone Nepalese Community.
