A suspect is to appear at court charged with a serious assault on a police officer near Sittingbourne.

At around 6am on Sunday 22 October 2023, patrols were called to a report of a disturbance in Church Lane, Newington.

They approached an address following concerns for the welfare of a woman.

It is reported four constables were assaulted with one receiving serious facial injuries. The officers were treated by paramedics at the scene, with two requiring subsequent medical attention.

Four men and three women were subsequently arrested on suspicion of assault and public order offences.

The following day, a man from Canning Town, London was charged with wounding a police officer with intent to prevent the arrest of another and a public order offence. The 32-year-old was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday 24 October.

A Sheerness woman and another from Sittingbourne were both charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and a public order offence. In addition, a Sittingbourne woman was charged with a public order offence.

The three women have been bailed to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on 30 November. Two men aged 22 and 36 were bailed to return to the police station on 23 January 2024.

A further man was later released without charge.
