In the early hours of 23 August 2023Tony Jackson went to a small business park constructed from shipping containers within the Medway City Estate. Each container was a unit for a separate company and the burglar targeted them by forcing open their main doors and windows.

Jackson attempted to disguise himself by using a blue face mask and woollen hat. He proceeded to steal cash, a laptop computer, mobile phone and other portable items from seven businesses. At one premises he also removed some security cameras. In total, cash and property valued at more than £1,800 was taken.

CCTV images

The victims circulated CCTV images at one of the crime scenes on social media and he was recognised by a member of the public and a local police officer.

An investigation was launched by the Medway Victim Based Crime Team and additional evidence was gathered from mobile phone data and CCTV footage in the area.

Jackson, of Burnt Oak Terrace, Gillingham was tracked down and arrested on 2 September. He was later charged with seven burglaries.

The 62-year-old pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court and on 19 October was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment.

Investigating officer, PC Jack Coverley-Saich, said: ‘Jackson targeted small business thinking nothing of the impact he would have on hard-working victims who would have to replace stolen cash and property, and repair damage caused to doors and windows. His actions could have had an effect on victims’ ability to continue trading and he should be thoroughly ashamed.
‘A prompt investigation by officers to gather evidence and track the offender down meant his crime spree came to an abrupt halt. I would particularly like to thank the businesses owners who proactively circulated CCTV images after the incidents and ensured this criminal was brought to justice.’
