A 27-year-old man has been charged and remanded in custody following a disturbance near Tunbridge Wells where it is alleged police were spat at and threatened with a knife.

At around 10.40pm on Friday 27 October 2023, police arrived at an address in Valley Road, Rusthall in connection with a reported assault nearby.

It is alleged constables were stopped from entering the property and were warned by a man seen holding a knife they would be stabbed.

They were reportedly also spat at from an upstairs window and objects were thrown in their direction. It is further alleged three other people in the property were assaulted.

Further police resources were sent to the scene and at around 3am on Saturday 28 October, they were able to safely enter the property.

A man of no fixed address, was arrested and later charged with affray and six counts of assault, which included three counts of assault by beating of an emergency worker.

He was further charged with three counts of criminal damage. These allegations relate to spitting in a police van, urinating on the floor of a custody cell and damage to items at the property in Rusthall.

The suspect was remanded to a hearing at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Monday 30 October.
