Butt out: Litterbugs in Medway cough up £8,000 for tossing cigarettes

Dozens of careless smokers have been slapped with hefty fines for throwing their cigarette butts in Medway.

Twenty-six litterbugs were taken to court after they ignored the fixed penalty notices they received for their dirty deeds.

The offences all happened between January and February this year with the favourite area for littering being the M2 motorway services.

Keep Medway tidy Cllr Tris Osborne, Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder covering Enforcement, said:

“We all have a duty to keep our environment clean, and it is not fair to litter. Many people work hard to make Medway a nice place to live, and we will not let a few bad apples spoil that. We will continue to crack down on anyone who is caught littering in Medway.”

The 26 cases were heard at East Berkshire Magistrates’ Court Slough on 4 September 2023. One person pleaded guilty and the rest of the cases were proved in their absence.
