Young people in Dover learn to spot and prevent exploitation

Young people in the Dover area have been learning how to spot and prevent exploitation with support from Kent Police’s Child-Centred Policing Team.

Officers have held assemblies at a number of schools across the district to raise awareness of issues including gangs and county lines.

During the week beginning Monday 11 December 2023 it was the turn of Sir Roger Manwood’s School in Sandwich.

PC Joel Ruddock spoke to all age groups about the risks posed by criminals who may be looking to recruit young people to help them deal drugs or commit other offences, and provided advice on who to contact if they are in need of support.

He said:

‘Whilst the vast majority of young people will never be approached to engage in illegal activity, it is important that anyone who may be vulnerable to exploitation is able to spot when someone may be trying to take advantage of them and know where to go for help.

‘Being able to speak directly to children about the potential risks posed by criminals is invaluable and I am grateful to every school that has allowed me to do so to date.’

Lee Hunter, head teacher of Sir Roger Manwood’s School, said:

‘We have a close working relationship with Kent Police and were pleased to welcome PC Ruddock to our school for the benefit of all our students.

‘Their welfare is our top priority whether inside or outside of the classroom, and it is very important they know how to recognise potential criminal behaviour at the earliest opportunity.’
