The Met Office has issued a severe weather warning for the public, urging them to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary. If you have to travel, be prepared for chaos on the roads and public transport. You may have to cancel your plans or dodge certain routes.

If you live in an area that is vulnerable to power cuts, make sure you have some emergency supplies, such as torches, batteries, and a mobile phone charger. You don’t want to be trapped in the dark or cut off from the outside world.

If you are on the coast, beware of the large waves that can crash onto the shore. Even from a distance, they can drag you into the sea. Be careful if walking near cliffs; stick to your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.

Be ready for weather warnings to shift rapidly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office advises you to keep an eye on the weather forecast in your area.
