A man is due in court after allegedly assaulting a person with a baseball bat and setting fire to a property in Canterbury.

On 11 December 2023, officers were called to an address in Frencham Close following reports that a person had been kicked, punched and attacked with a baseball bat before their room was then set on fire.

Kent Fire and Rescue were called to put out the blaze and residents were evacuated from the building. South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics treated the victim, who was later taken to hospital with head injuries and suffering from smoke inhalation. The victim has since been discharged.

An investigation led to the arrest of a 35-year-old man from Canterbury. He was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and arson with intent to endanger life on 12 December 2023.

The accused appeared before Folkestone Magistrate’s Court on 13 December and was remanded in custody. He is due to re-appear before Canterbury Crown Court on 15 January 2024.

Another man was arrested in connection with the incident and later bailed pending further enquiries.
