You’ll be assured of an enthusiastic welcome at the upcoming Lunar New Year 2024 celebrations in Maidstone when the town will be buzzing with excitement as the Chinese Lions awaken from their slumber in Jubilee Square, ready to prowl the town centre on Saturday 3 February starting at 12noon and going on until 2.30pm.

The dotting of the eyes ceremony has already taken place, and the Lions are now ready to playfully entertain the crowds.

The SOAS musical ensemble is playing traditional silk and bamboo music of the Shanghai tea houses, filling the air with authentic sounds that transport you to the heart of China. The beautiful music from the Chinese Opera is also a treat for the ears.

The Sichuan changing face and ribbon dance puppets are a sight to behold. They will be entertaining the crowds with their stunning performances, all completely free of charge. You don’t want to miss this!

As part of the celebrations, Lockmeadow Entertainment Centre is offering free dragon crafts from 12.30pm. You can also watch the amazing Chinese Lions dancing at 2.30pm.

Maidstone Borough Council, Cohesion Plus, and Maidstone Cultural Group have come together to bring these colourful, energetic Lunar New Year celebrations to the town centre. It’s a great opportunity to experience the rich culture and traditions of China.

Cllr Claudine Russell, Lead Member for Leisure and Arts at MBC said:

“The Lunar New Year celebrations are the first town centre event we have planned for this year, they are so vibrant and bring the town to life. Put the date in your diaries and come along and enjoy the fun, it’s all free too.”

Gurvinder Sandher MBE from Cohesion Plus is producing the event, he said:

“We are proud of how the Lunar New Year celebrations in Maidstone have become some of the biggest in the County. We have another exciting programme of entertainment planned in the town centre and look forward to welcoming local residents. As ever we are grateful to Maidstone Borough Council and community partners for their support in the build up.”
