Words by Ray Duff – On Wednesday evening an albeit hastily arranged memorial to the deaths of the five migrants, which included a seven-year-old girl who perished as they attempted to reach England on Tuesday, was held on Folkestone’s Sunny Sands beach and attended by a small group people.

Organised at short notice by local activist and migrant rights advocate, Bridget Chapman, the group marked the solemn occasion whilst calling for the setting up of ‘Safe Routes Now’ to help end the currently on-going risks taken by migrants attempting the hazardous crossing.

Earlier in the day another memorial had been held in the French coastal town of Wimereux where the migrants had attempted to leave on a reportedly overcrowded inflatable craft.
