DDC’s cabinet has agreed to purchase 48 new affordable homes in Deal to help address the need for more social housing in the district. The properties in Wingfield Place in Deal will be bought with the support of Homes England funding and developer contributions.
They will be added to the Council’s housing stock, with 38 made available for social rent and 10 for shared ownership to help local people get a foot on the housing ladder. The homes are a mix of two and three-bedroom houses.
The Council is working on an increased programme of affordable housing and a number of housing schemes have been completed in the past year, including those in Whitfield, Woodnesborough and Nonington.
Cllr Pamela Brivio, DDC’s cabinet member for housing, skills and education, said:
“Our priority as a council is to provide more affordable homes across the district, whether that’s building them ourselves or acquiring them from developers.
“I cannot emphasise enough the positive impact having a secure home has on a family or individual. It really can change lives, so we are determined to increase our affordable housing stock to benefit local people.”
What is affordable housing?
- Affordable housing includes social and affordable rented homes, provided to eligible households whose needs are not met by the market.
- It also includes shared ownership, which supports first-time buyers into home ownership.
- There are different types of rent. Social rent is paid to registered providers or local authorities. It is low-cost and set by a government formula.
- Affordable rent is rent that is set at up to 80% of market rent.
