Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall
The village of Capel-le-Ferne near Folkestone in Kent, home to the National Memorial to the Few, will be marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day by lighting a clifftop beacon on the evening of Thursday 6 June.
A torchlit procession from the village hall will end at the Battle of Britain Memorial, where the commemorative beacon will be lit at 9.15 following a bugle call. The event will mark the anniversary of the start of the liberation of mainland Europe by the Allies in 1944, something that would not have been possible had the Royal Air Force lost the Battle of Britain.
The victory by Churchill’s ‘Few’ over the Luftwaffe in 1940 prevented an invasion of this country, allowing the south coast to be used as the embarkation point for the D-Day landings four years later.
The evening commemoration will give visitors a chance to enjoy the fully illuminated Memorial, with all the attractions, including the Christopher Foxley-Norris Memorial Wall, Scramble Experience, shop and café, open from 8pm until 10pm.
The Memorial is dedicated to telling the story of the Few, the aircrew who fought the Battle of Britain, with hands-on, family friendly exhibits in the high-tech Scramble Experience and a number of outside features highlighting their bravery and sacrifice.
