The stricken Spitfire replica Photo: Battle of Britain Memorial Trust
The Battle of Britain Memorial Trust is reaching out with an urgent appeal for help replacing their replica Spitfire, which was severely damaged by Storm Ciaran in November 2023.
The beloved aircraft, one of their most popular attractions, suffered extensive damage when strong winds swept through the Memorial, leaving it with a buckled undercarriage.
When news of the damage broke, they were overwhelmed with support from well-wishers.
At that time, they were still negotiating with insurers and restorers, but now that these discussions have concluded, the Trust has launched a Crowdfunder campaign to channel this generosity into action and recently, the aircraft was transported to Great Yarmouth for an assessment.
The Spitfire replica has been at the Memorial since 2004, which means it had endured the coastal weather conditions at Capel-le-Ferne for twenty wet, windy and salty years. The Trust admit that restoration would extend its life for a few years, but it believes a sensible, long-term solution would be to replace the replica, giving it a much longer life and bringing pleasure to many thousands more visitors.
It’s understood that although insurance will cover a substantial portion of the costs, there remains a shortfall that the Trust hope their community can help bridge.
It says:
