A man from Hempstead has been sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on 21 June 2024 after he admitted controlling and coercive behaviour and intentional strangulation upon his former partner. He was found guilty of actual bodily harm and jailed for more than two years following a three-day trial.

The court heard how 36-year-old Sean Green had targeted his former partner between 1 September and 19 November 2023 during several incidents.

During one argument, on 21 October, Green headbutted the victim and grabbed her around her neck, causing her to struggle for breath. He only stopped when a child in the property walked into the room where the incident was taking place.

On 4 November he slapped her around her face and Kent Police was called. He was arrested and later bailed with conditions not to contact the victim, however he ignored these conditions and continued to contact her.

On 18 November he accused the victim of hacking his phone and bugging it. He went onto leave her eight voice messages. In these voice messages he used foul language and threatened to hurt her. He then went to her address where he continued to shout threats outside the property.

Green was later arrested and following an investigation he was subsequently charged.

As well as being sentenced Green was also handed a seven-year restraining order to prevent him from contacting the victim.

Investigating officer Detective Constable Saffron Underdown said:

‘Green subjected his former partner to frightening and violent behaviour during several incidents.

‘Domestic abuse is taken extremely seriously by Kent Police and often victims feel isolated and scared and sometimes remain silent in the hope that their partner’s behaviour will change.

‘We have specially trained officers who will work with victims in a sensitive and diligent manner, and I want to remind victims they are never alone. If anyone reading this faces this situation, then please call us so we can start to help you.’
