Advice on making the right call if someone is in trouble in inland water!

As we enter summer and start enjoying the outdoors more, the risk of accidental drownings increases significantly.  If you spot someone in trouble in water, quick action can mean the difference between life and death, and knowing who to call can help to save valuable time.   For rescue from a lake, river, or any other area of inland water in Kent and Medway, call 999 and ask for the fire service. If it’s coastal, ask for the coastguard.

Who to call? 

If you see someone struggling in inland water …

Call 999 and ask for the fire service. 

You’ll be put through to one of our Control operators who will ask you where you are and about the person in the water. Please give as much information as you can. Our Control operator might also ask you if there’s a throwline or life ring nearby. If there is, they will give you instructions on how to use it.

What is cold water shock?

Lakes and rivers can  be deeper and colder than they look and can cause people to go into cold water shock. 

Cold water shock can leave you gasping for breath and reduces your muscle strength, which can prevent you from swimming to safety.

What is inland water?

Inland water includes rivers, creeks, canals, lakes and reservoirs – call 999 and ask for the fire service.. 

Coastal water is the sea or any water that is tidal – call 999 and ask for the coastguard
