Police in Sheerness have continued the fight against retail crime in the town with the arrest of a man suspected of shoplifting multiple times.
Between Friday 19 July and Thursday 1 August 2024, Kent Police received reports of several thefts from shops in the town, including Boots the Chemist, Iceland and the Co-op. Food, laundry and cosmetic items valued at more than £450 were allegedly stolen, and investigations into the incidents, including the examination of CCTV footage, were begun.
On 1 August, patrols were called to the Co-op where a man had reportedly assaulted a member of staff after failing to pay for a quantity of meat. The officers arrested a man and he was taken into custody. The 54-year-old man from the town was later charged with assault and eight counts of theft. He appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court the following day and was remanded to a hearing at the same court on Friday 9 August.
