Three teenagers have been arrested in connection with a series of moped-related incidents in the town and nearby Whitstable.
Local police have been stepping up patrols in response to reports of nuisance riding and vehicle thefts. On Saturday, October 12, officers responded to reports of mopeds being ridden dangerously in the area.
During a search, a stolen moped was found abandoned in Herne Bay. A 14-year-old boy from the town was arrested and later released on bail pending further investigation.
The following day, another moped failed to stop for police and was eventually apprehended in Whitstable. Two more 14-year-old boys were arrested in connection with this incident. They have also been released on bail.
The stolen mopeds have been recovered and investigations into the incidents are ongoing.
Sergeant Jonathan Sheehan said:
‘We are taking this opportunity to ask moped and motorbike owners to ensure they are taking all the precautions necessary to help reduce the risk of vehicle theft.
‘If anyone sees people acting suspiciously around mopeds or vehicles, report it to Kent Police via our website, or call 999 if a crime is in progress.
‘We ask residents to be vigilant and note down any registration numbers of vehicles they see causing a nuisance, as it will assist police with enquiries into the issue.
‘Arrests are being made and anyone seen by officers riding dangerously on a moped will be stopped and action will be taken against them.’
