A significant fire broke out in a derelict building on East Hill in Ashford in the early hours of Saturday morning. Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) was alerted to the incident just after 12.45am.
At the height of the fire, ten fire engines, a height vehicle, and a bulk water carrier were deployed to the scene. Firefighters, wearing breathing apparatus, tackled the blaze using main jets. The technical rescue unit and KFRS Volunteer Response Team also assisted in the operation.
Due to the large amount of smoke generated by the fire, residents in the town centre and Mace Lane area were advised to keep their windows and doors closed as a precautionary measure. Mace Lane was temporarily closed in both directions to facilitate emergency response.
The fire was brought under control by 6:06pm. There were no reported injuries.
The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and is being treated as suspicious.
A spokesperson for KFRS stated:
“People are advised to stay updated with the latest information and avoid the affected area.”
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of fire safety and the potential dangers posed by derelict buildings.
