The Dover District Council Conservative Group is over the moon to welcome Councillor Charles Woodgate, who has left the Labour Party and the Labour Group to join the Conservative Party.

His decision reflects growing dissatisfaction with Labour policies under the current government and a recognition of the Conservative Group’s vision for a stronger, more prosperous district. Councillor Woodgate’s move leaves the Labour Group with 16 of the 32 council seats, placing the council in no overall control.

Councillor Trevor Bartlett, Leader of the Conservative Group at Dover District Council, said:

“We are thrilled to welcome Councillor Woodgate to our group of like-minded individuals committed to delivering for residents across Dover District. His experience and dedication will strengthen our ability to tackle local issues and drive positive change. Across the country, people are rejecting Labour’s divisive policies, including the removal of winter fuel payments, unfair inheritance tax measures targeting farmers, and damaging tax increases on businesses. This defection highlights the clear choice between a failing Labour government and our Conservative commitment to responsibility, growth, and fairness.”

Councillor Charles Woodgate added:

“I have become increasingly disillusioned with the national Labour party since the last election. Policies such as removing the winter fuel allowance from many older people, and adding a tax on learning have been particularly disappointing.”

The Conservative Group remains focused on delivering a secure, affordable future for all residents while promoting business growth, responsible tax policies, and fair support for hardworking families and vulnerable individuals alike.”
