A late-night joyride for an 18-year-old Canterbury man came to a screeching halt early Tuesday morning when eagle-eyed police officers spotted a suspicious moped weaving through Bullockstone Road. The bike, sporting a mangled number plate and emitting not a glimmer of rear light, immediately aroused suspicion.

A swift stop ensued, and the rider’s story began to unravel. No key, no ownership documents and a suspicious substance, later identified as cannabis, was discovered on the rider’s person.

Further investigation revealed the number plate adorning the moped had been reported stolen from an entirely different vehicle!

The 18-year-old was promptly arrested on a raft of charges, including vehicle theft, theft of the number plate, driving offences, and possession of a controlled substance. He was subsequently released on bail, but the investigation into the moped’s rightful owner is still ongoing. This case serves as a stark reminder that law enforcement is always on the lookout, and those who think they can get away with such brazen acts will face the full force of the law.
