According to reports a person has been spotted searching through residents’ rubbish bins in the harbour area of Folkestone. It is believed that they may be collecting information from the paperwork they discover.
Police are understood to be patrolling the area to disrupt this activity and deal with any offences.
Residents disposing of documents with any sensitive data, such as names, dates of birth, bank details should consider the following action before binning the paperwork:
- Shred the documents or rip them up, ensuring no data is left on the same strip.
- Place it in the recycling the morning or night before it is due to be collected.
- Remove data by redacting it, such as scrawling over it with a pen.
- Be mindful though that this may not completely remove the data!
