Police in Margate have seized £2,000 worth of illicit tobacco from local shops. Seventeen premises were inspected on January 29th, 2025, in a joint operation with Trading Standards. Contraband cigarettes, tobacco, and vapes were discovered at two locations.
A 45-year-old man wanted on a recall to prison was also arrested during the operation. Inspector Jim Woodward emphasized the link between illegal tobacco sales and organized crime, urging businesses to trade responsibly.
Inspector Jim Woodward said:
‘Businesses have a responsibility to ensure they are trading legally when it comes to the sales of goods including tobacco and alcohol. Without their cooperation, it can lead to issues in communities relating to nuisance behaviour, and although it is carried out by a small number of people, it can have a big impact.
‘Also, very often the sale of illicit goods are supporting organised criminal groups. It is important to consider that anyone buying this tobacco might think it is a bargain price, but it can prove costly for all, as each purchase supports more serious crime in the area.
‘Our officers also carried out licensing checks with regards to the sale of alcohol and will continue to ensure business owners are operating legally and playing their part in helping to deter antisocial behaviour.’
