Magistrates have fined nine people more than £5,000 for littering in Medway after they failed to pay fixed penalty charges.

In total, nine people were ordered to pay a combined £5,022 for failing to pay fixed penalty notices (FPNs) for littering. This was made up of eight from Kent and one from Essex who were ordered to pay £558 each.

The offences took place between May and July 2024.

Cllr Alex Paterson, Portfolio Holder for Highways, Enforcement and Community Safety, said:

“Our message remains the same – we will continue to enforce the rules against the small minority of people who leave the rest of us to pick up after them. Littering is not tolerated in Medway, and we will always look to follow-up on unpaid Fixed Penalty Notices with prosecution whenever possible.”

The cases were heard at Medway Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 7 January 2025. All of the cases were proved in absence. The Environmental Protection Act 1990 allows for authorised officers to issue fixed penalty notices on any land the public has access to. Our contracted litter enforcement agents patrol across Medway including in the area’s high streets, greenspaces, supermarket car parks and other areas which have high levels of littering.
