A flat in Dover has been closed following a successful application for a closure order by Kent Police at Margate Magistrates’ Court on February 5, 2025. The property, located on Maison Dieu Road, had been the subject of numerous complaints regarding drug use, noise, and antisocial behaviour.

Police were alerted to the property after reports of constant traffic of drug and alcohol users at all hours, causing disruption to neighbours and raising concerns about the potential exploitation of a vulnerable resident. Officers also noted the poor condition of the flat, including the presence of black mould. Concerns about “cuckooing,” where criminals take over a vulnerable person’s home, and the safeguarding of residents were also raised. Neighbours reported being threatened by visitors to the property and also cited instances of criminal damage in communal areas.
Working with the local community, police gathered sufficient evidence to secure the three-month closure order under Section 80 of the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014. The order prohibits anyone, other than emergency services and social services, from entering the property. Breaching the order could result in imprisonment or an unlimited fine.
Following the court order, police secured the property and arrested a man who refused to leave. He has since been charged in connection with the incident. Authorities also worked to relocate the resident who had been affected by the disturbances to a safer location.
A police spokesperson stated that the closure order demonstrates their commitment to tackling antisocial behaviour and safeguarding vulnerable individuals. They added that the action was taken following reports of threats against neighbours and concerns about the resident’s potential exploitation, and that they hope the community will feel reassured by the action taken.
