Swift action by local police has resulted in the rapid conviction and sentencing of a prolific shoplifter in Margate. Keith McKay, 42, was apprehended and jailed within 48 hours of being identified by eagle-eyed neighbourhood PCSOs.
The incident unfolded on Saturday, February 22, 2025, when PCSOs patrolling Margate High Street spotted a man, later identified as McKay, matching the description of a suspect wanted for theft. He was observed standing with multiple holdall bags.
Upon the arrival of responding officers, McKay fled but was quickly detained. A search of his bags revealed a haul of suspected stolen goods, including meat, fish, cheese, laundry products, and a power tool, all with labels removed.
McKay initially claimed the bags contained his belongings and requested to drop them off at a friend’s house, a request denied by police. A small quantity of class C drugs was also discovered on his person.
During his journey to the police station, McKay became aggressive, attempting to kick and bite officers. Following a thorough investigation, which included identifying the businesses from which the items were stolen, McKay was charged the next day.
Appearing at Margate Magistrates’ Court on Monday, February 24, McKay, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to multiple theft charges from stores in the Westwood area between February 13 and 22, possession of a controlled drug, and assault of an emergency worker .He was sentenced to 150 days in prison and ordered to pay compensation for the stolen goods.
Inspector Matthew Vick said:
‘Officers will do all they can to ensure prolific thieves are caught and brought before the court as quickly as possible.
‘Shoplifting negatively impacts businesses and can also cause repercussions for the wider community.
‘In McKay’s case he was jailed within two days of being found with bags full of stolen goods. Investigating officers worked with local businesses to ensure the evidence was secured, leaving little doubt as to Mckay’s criminal behaviour.’
