Anglers across the South East are facing the final countdown as the annual close season for coarse fishing looms. Starting this Saturday, March 15th, and lasting until June 15th, fishing for coarse fish in rivers and streams will be strictly prohibited.
The Environment Agency (EA) is issuing a stark reminder that the three-month ban is in place to safeguard vulnerable fish stocks during their crucial spawning period. This annual measure aims to protect the future of coarse fish populations across England.
“We urge all anglers to respect the close season,” stated an EA spokesperson. “This vital period allows fish to spawn undisturbed, ensuring healthy populations for future seasons.”
To enforce the ban, the EA is ramping up patrols across the region. Officers will be actively monitoring rivers and streams, and notices have been posted in popular fishing spots to reinforce the regulations.
Adding to the enforcement efforts, the Angling Trust (AT) is collaborating with the EA through Operation CLAMPDOWN. Volunteer bailiffs will be patrolling riverbanks, acting as the eyes and ears of the agency, and reporting any illegal fishing activity.
Anyone witnessing illegal fishing is urged to report it immediately to the EA’s 24-hour incident hotline at 0800 80 70 60. Officials warn that those caught fishing during the close season face prosecution.
