Eight people have been collectively fined £2,464 by Medway Magistrates’ Court for littering offences, primarily involving discarded cigarette butts. The offenders, hailing from Medway, Dover, and London, were each ordered to pay £308 after failing to settle fixed penalty notices issued for littering between July and August of the preceding year.

Medway Council’s Portfolio Holder for Highways, Enforcement, and Community Safety, Councillor Alex Paterson, emphasized the council’s firm stance against littering.

“We maintain a zero-tolerance policy towards littering in Medway,” stated Councillor Paterson. “These court outcomes demonstrate our commitment to holding individuals accountable and pursuing prosecution when necessary. While the majority of Medway residents and visitors responsibly dispose of their waste, it is crucial that those who disregard these standards understand they will face repercussions.”

The cases were adjudicated at Medway Magistrates’ Court on February 4th, 2025, with all cases proven in the absence of the defendants.

Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, authorized officers are empowered to issue fixed penalty notices on any publicly accessible land. Medway Council’s contracted litter enforcement agents conduct patrols throughout the area, including high streets, green spaces, supermarket car parks, and other locations prone to littering.

Residents are encouraged to report littering incidents to Medway Council through their designated reporting channels. Find out how to report littering in Medway.
