A significant haul of illicit tobacco and cash has been seized in Ashford, following concerns raised by vigilant residents during a community engagement event. Kent Police confirmed the seizure of over 1,500 boxes of illegal cigarettes and the arrest of two men on March 18th.

Beat officers, engaging with the public in Ashford town centre, received crucial information regarding suspicious activity at a local premises. Residents reported frequent open access to the property, late-night entries by unknown individuals, and unusual activity around the rear gate.

Acting swiftly on these community concerns, officers located the property and initiated inquiries. This led to the arrest of one man found inside, on suspicion of possession of criminal property. A second man attempted to flee via a first-floor window but was apprehended and also arrested on similar charges.

A thorough search of the premises revealed approximately £4,000 in cash and a substantial quantity of illicit tobacco products, totalling more than 1,500 boxes of cigarettes.

One man has since been released under investigation, while the other was released without charge. Kent Police have launched an ongoing investigation into the matter.

This operation coincides with collaborative efforts between Kent Police and Trading Standards, targeting the sale of illicit tobacco within Ashford town centre, which has resulted in further seizures from local shops. The police have stressed the importance of community involvement in tackling such criminal activity.
