Good news is on the horizon for coastal communities as essential spring beach management work is scheduled to begin next week, bolstering defences against flooding for more than 3,000 homes and businesses.
Starting Tuesday, April 22nd, skilled contractors will undertake the important task of recycling and regrading shingle between the picturesque Fisherman’s Beach in Hythe and the bustling Folkestone Harbour.
This eight-week project represents a positive step in maintaining a robust coastal defence system. Utilizing the most cost-efficient and highly effective method available, this approach offers superior protection compared to older timber structures, ensuring the continued safety and security of this valuable five-mile stretch of coastline.
A Folkestone & Hythe District Council spokesperson said:
“This important task, which will see approximately 142,000 tonnes of shingle moved on this occasion, is carried out twice a year and helps bolster the sea wall.
“It’s all about further reducing the risks of flooding and coastal erosion and, ultimately, safeguarding our residents.”
Shingle is moved from east to west to allow the longshore drift to naturally spread it to aid the prevention of overtopping during storm events. Any disruption will be kept to a minimum.
