Library image: Maison Dieu before the refurbishment

Dover’s landmark Maison Dieu (Town Hall) celebrates its grand reopening to the public on the weekend of May 10-11, following a significant £10 million refurbishment. This marks the first time in its 800-year history that the building will be permanently accessible.

Residents are invited to witness the stunning restoration, which has revitalised architect William Burges’ original interiors, including restored paintings, armoury, and stained glass.

The revitalized space features nine interactive displays, films, and audio guides detailing the building’s rich history. Younger visitors can enjoy engaging activities, while volunteer guides will showcase the Connaught Hall, Stone Hall, and Council Chamber – now available for community events and private hire. Future plans include guided tours and a diverse events program.

The opening weekend offers opportunities to meet conservators and costumed characters, enjoy performances, participate in arts and crafts, and explore history through hands-on activities. Visitors can also learn about volunteer opportunities and discuss hosting their own events at the venue. Significantly, the Maison Dieu now boasts improved accessibility with a new street-level entrance and a lift. The ambitious project was funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and other key partners.

This ambitious £10 million project has been funded by The National Lottery Heritage Fund and made possible thanks to National Lottery players.  It has also been funded by DDC, Dover Town Council, The Dover Society and the Wolfson Foundation.

Chief Executive of DDC Nadeem Aziz said:

“The Maison Dieu holds so many special memories for our residents and is a restoration project that we know has been long awaited by our community.

“We’re really looking forward to seeing everyone enjoying this magnificent building and what it has to offer as it becomes the heart of Dover once again.

“The Maison Dieu will further enhance the town as a place to visit. For the first time in its history, the new building will be free to enter and open seven days a week.”

The Maison Dieu’s opening times will be:

  • Monday to Friday 9.30am to 3.30pm
  • Saturdays and Sunday 10am to 4pm
