Forget petty theft, this week saw law enforcement turn its attention to a dirtier kind of crime! A crack team of eco-conscious officers descended upon Canterbury on Wednesday, April 23rd, targeting rogue waste disposal operators.
In a powerful multi-agency blitz involving Kent Police’s Rural Task Force, the Environment Agency, Canterbury City Council, DVSA, and HMRC, no refuse vehicle was safe. These environmental enforcers swooped in, conducting rigorous roadside checks to ensure waste carriers were playing by the rules.

The high-stakes operation wasn’t just about dumped rubbish; it aimed to crush a whole spectrum of environmental offences. From verifying proper waste handling to ensuring roadworthiness and cracking down on overloaded lorries, the team left no stone unturned.
By the day’s end, a staggering 31 vehicles faced the music, with 16 immediate actions taken. Faulty tyres were grounded, unlicensed drivers faced the consequences, and overweight trucks received stern warnings. This decisive action sends a clear message: mess with Canterbury’s environment, and you’ll face the force of the law!
Sgt Darren Walshaw, of Kent Police’s Rural Task Force, said:
“Operations like this one are a testament to the strong partnerships we have with local authorities and government agencies. By working together, we were able to carry out thorough, successful, checks on those responsible for transporting waste.
“Unlicensed or non-compliant waste disposal can cause serious harm to our environment and communities, these proactive checks help Kent Police to tackle the issue head on.”
