Folkestone is buzzing with excitement as Councillor Lucy McGirr has been elected The Worshipful Town Mayor for 2025-26!

The announcement was made at the Annual Council Meeting on Tuesday, May 6th, in a vibrant ceremony attended by special guests and local leaders.

The outgoing Mayor, Councillor Abena Akuffo-Kelly, received warm applause and a special gift from fellow Councillors after a fantastic year. Her dedication saw over £7,500 raised for her chosen charities: HomeStart Shepway, the Nepalese Community Centre, and the Community Fridge – a truly commendable achievement!

Now, the town enthusiastically welcomes Councillor Lucy McGirr to the mayoral role.

Mayor McGirr shared her delight, stating she is “over the moon and overwhelmed” and eagerly anticipates an “exciting and busy year ahead.”

With a heartfelt commitment to giving a voice to those who struggle, particularly as a mother of three young children, including two with additional needs, Mayor McGirr is set to champion inclusivity and community spirit. She also looks forward to proudly representing Folkestone both locally and beyond.

Joining the Mayor in her year of service are Revd Chris Johnson from St Mary & St Eanswythe’s Church, who will serve as her Chaplain, and Cadet Sgt Holly Kasinathan from the 99 (Folkestone) Squadron RAFC, named as the Mayor’s Cadet. The Mayor will also be supported by her Consort, Mr Tim McGirr.

Looking ahead, Mayor McGirr has announced her nominated charities for the year: the East Folkestone Youth Club and the Community Network. We’re sure the town will rally behind these worthy causes!

Adding to the positive momentum, Councillor Jackie Meade was elected as the Deputy Town Mayor.
