Kent Police investigating a theft from a Chatham churchyard have recovered a second missing plaque and arrested a further suspect after two memorials were stolen from Christ Church in Luton Road, at around 10pm on Friday 23 May 2025.

Initially one of the stolen items was discovered after cops travelled to an Essex scrapyard to collect it on Thursday 28 May. Determined to track down the second plaque, they pursued enquiries at several further businesses in Kent and Essex the following day and subsequently recovered it in a damaged condition and promptly returned to the Medway parish.

An eighth suspect, a 38-year-old man from Chatham, was arrested on Friday 30 May. A Range Rover was also seized.

Seven men from the Dartford and Medway areas who were previously detained in connection with the theft have been conditionally bailed while the investigation is completed.

Kent Police’s officer in the case, PC Alanya Spiller, said:

‘Our team have been really focused on recovering these two items that are so special to the Luton community and the relatives of those who gave their lives in the First World War. We are hopeful that the damaged plaque can be fully restored.

‘Equally important is the task of bringing those responsible for the theft to justice, and this work continues.’
